Charity

Our expedition also comprises a charitable initiative. We will act as a mobile distribution and administration unit for the latest technology in self-refraction eyewear.

The work of Oxford University's Professor Silver at the Centre for Vision in the Developing World is invaluable in the fight against avoidable blindness - and our expedition is perfectly placed to promote their efforts. Our documentary will ultimately aid the Centre's work to gain the recognition it deserves amongst the general public.

To this end we have been donated one hundred pairs of glasses, but we still have a long way to go if we are to make this expedition succeed.

We plan to document the human effects of visual impairment, following specific individuals on their unique journey back to sight. We aim to expose the real challenges faced in communities without adequate eye care and document the contrast between European comfort and the harshness of the Himalayan peaks.

The WHO's ‘Right to Sight’ campaign aims to eradicate avoidable blindness worldwide by 2020; some claim this target is impossible to achieve – just as we were told we would not be able to make our expedition happen. Documenting these individuals’ return to sight will sharpen our own focus on the issues around us.

With your help and support we can leave a lasting legacy in the form of invaluable publicity for both philanthropic organisations and scientists working in the field of visual impairment.
